Meath Sidesaddle Portrait, I drawing stage by Gail Guirreri-Maslyk

Meath Sidesaddle Portrait, I (2013) was painted by Gail Guirreri-Maslyk was drawn in washes of transparent orange, purple dioxazine, ultramarine blue and quinacridone magenta. This is not a normal palette for a sporting artist. Gail developed this palette specifically for her quick brush stroke style. The colors blend easily, never becoming messy or dull which makes dirty brush, fast painting possible. Layers of transparent paint move around the large canvas, 48" x 60", without becoming heavy. White is only added as the drawing is decided and the masses can be painted. The glow of the transparent paint can still be seen in the final canvas. This can be seen in many of Gail's canvases. Opaque paint is often haloed by glowing transparent washes. The scrub bushes become lighter and offer more movement in the upper right of the canvas. This is due to the light touch of opaque over transparent paint.
